post Recipe for a Happy Life

Are you happy with your life. Are you happy in your work or career? Do you wonder what makes people happy in Life? Do you want to be happy for the rest of your life? If you ask any or all of these questions of yourself, you are not alone. Tens of thousands of people, just like you and me, when ask what they desire most in life, respond by saying that they would “just like to be happy”. And, so we set out on a journey, a search, an adventure to find happiness. We look to people to make us happy. We look to material things to make us happy. We look to extra curricular activities to make us happy. We look to our work and careers to make us happy, and we look to all kinds of self help and “spiritual” experts to help us become happy.

But, none of these really work do they? It is true that we may find someone or something that makes us feel good and “happy” at times, but yet not really deeply satisfied and truly content, and not continually. All people and things will at some point or at certain times disappoint us, leave us dissatisfied…unhappy. So, is there anyone or anything that can offer us true meaningful, lasting happiness, contentment and peace.

The answer is yes! You see our unhappiness resides in our hearts. There is something missing that we were designed and meant to have in our hearts and in our lives; their is a key ingredient, a vital piece missing. This missing piece leaves a hole, an empty space that cries out to be filled with the only piece that fits perfectly. We sense this hole, this emptiness. and we try to fill it with everything we can get our hands on; relationships, money, material things, drugs, alcohol, work, activities, etc. These things may temporarily give us the illusion that the hole is properly filled, but most of the time we know in our hearts it is not. We go form one thing to the next because none fit the hole, fill the emptiness, satisfy, or make us happy.

This Journey can leave us exhausted, frustrated, disappointed, discouraged, disillusioned, bitter, resentful, and angry. At this point, we either continue to forge ahead and end up in a vicious cycle of feeling unhappy, throwing one of those temporary wrongly fitting pieces in there then back to feeling unhappy, or worse we enter a serious downward spiral of depression.

So, what is this hole in our hearts and where is the missing piece? Are you ready for the answer? I know I was!

The hole is that space in our hearts that God, our creator, desires to fill. God created us to have and be in relation with him. But, although this is true, he has given us free will and wants us to have that same desire to be with him. He loves us too much to force his will upon us. He created the heavens and the earth as evidence of his existence and to get our attention. he is saying “look what I made for you because I love you and I ant you to have the very best”. Now be honest, have you ever gazed upon the beauty of nature, God’s creation, and sensed deep in your heart and soul that God’s hand was responsible. That is him, nudging you; saying I am here and I love you; I will always be here, and I will always love you.

In Revelation, he says it this way:

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” (Revelation 3:20)

Imagine, the very God of the universe the creator at your door waiting to sit with you, spend time with you…like a friend…like a father…to comfort you and to bring you peace and contentment even during times of difficulty.

Here are some other words of encouragement from your heavenly father who loves you and wants to know you personally:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. ” (Romans 15:13)

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-8)

To further help you as you seek the truth about finding true peace and contentment in life and at work, I present these resources for your consideration. God’s peace!

Each has a very relevant message and valuable nuggets that have helped me personally move closer to living a happy life. So, if you are looking for the answer to what makes people happy in life, you must read, study, and enjoy the following books.

In Happiness Matters Dennis Leonard explores the principles of true happiness and the negative habits that strip happiness from our lives. Discover the secrets to true happiness and remember that nothing in life just happens. You can choose to experience happiness today!

The Lost Virtue of Happiness is an amazing book! The first two chapters were very eye-opening. Moreland writes that happiness should not be our goal in life, but rather, happiness is a side-effect of living virtuously. Moreland and Issler continue to write about the lost art of spiritual disciplines–these are life-changing. The stuff that is presented in The Lost Virtue of Happiness is so important for everyone to know. I give this book a two-thumbs-up, and I am definitely going to pick out some more of Moreland’s books to read!

post Happy Life Thoughts

Hey let’s face it the battle to be happy and content is in our minds and in our hearts. So often we are bombarded with negative words, thoughts, and images; we must guard our hearts and minds from the emotionally and spiritually harmful words, thoughts, and images that tear us and others down. We must be purposeful and intentional about taking into our minds and hearts that which is good, right, encouraging, and uplifting. There is a timeless proverb that says “above all else guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”

This means we must be careful and choose wisely what we read, what we watch on TV, what we listen to, who we listen to, and what activities we participate in. You may be familiar with the computer term “garbage in…garbage out”, well the same is true for our hearts and minds. We must be very careful and sure of what we “put in” our hearts and minds! One of the best disciplines we can have is to consistently be fed with positive, uplifting inspiration.  If there is a recipe for a happy life, this would definitely be a key ingredient.

I enjoy and appreciate spiritual inspiration. Knowing that there is a loving God, who created me and knows what is best for me and promises to never leave nor forsake me is very comforting. If you too appreciate the reassurance of God’s word, or even if this is totally new to you, I highly recommend this wonderful and inspiring book by Joel Osteen. I urge you to try it; you might be surprised at what God’s vision and plan for your life is, and just how much joy and happiness you can find by getting to know him.

post Happy Life and Work- Featured Product, “The Janitor” (a short story about finding true happiness)

January 31st, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Bob Haddad @ 3:55 am

As I have searched for insight and wisdom regarding the keys and principles to discovering true happiness, peace, and joy, the best resource I have found is a little book titled The Janitor. In this book, you will find 6 proven and timeless principles to realizing greater peace and joy at home and at work. The book is an international best seller, and has received incredible reviews since being released in America. The 6 “directives” unwrapped in this captivating story will teach you what it takes to:

  1. Be more relaxed, refreshed, and fulfilled!

  2. Experience greater peace, joy, and unity in your marriage and family!

  3. Experience your work in a fresh and free way!

  4. Learn to separate the significant things in life from the junk!

  5. Be energized to help and serve others!

  6. Understand eternal significance and leave a legacy!

Do you ever find yourself losing sight of the important things in life?  I know i do.  Work and stress can become overwhelming at times. Such is the situation where CEO Roger Kimbrough finds himself in this captivating life and business parable.

The Janitor was inspired by Todd Hopkins’s personal experiences of interviewing overqualified retired businessmen for evening shift janitorial positions. Todd’s applicants consistently would say they simply needed something to do. In this fable, janitor Bob Tidwell helps Roger to reevaluate how he is leading his business and his life. Bob’s counsel is based upon six principles that Todd and coauthor Ray Hilbert discovered have the most impact on succeeding in business while holding together a personal life. Their insightful advice is delivered in a real-to-life story that inspires you to find greater fulfillment in your life and in your career.

Like so many CEOs in the corner office, still working when the janitor arrives to do the nightly cleaning, Roger is having a difficult and stressful evening when he spills his guts to the older janitor. As their relationship develops, Bob, a retired businessman, promises help that will turn Roger’s business and personal life around. The story follows not only their weekly meetings at the office but also the application of each principle:

  • Recharge vs. Discharge

  • View Family as a Blessing, Not a Responsibility

  • Pray, Don’t Pout

  • Pass It Around

  • Don’t Spend, Invest!

  • Leave a Legacy

The Janitor’s message will capture your mind and heart; stimulate meaningful, lasting life-changes; and show you how to influence your family, neighbors, and coworkers while experiencing business and life to the fullest.

“Take a few minutes and devour this little book by Todd Hopkins and Ray Hilbert. It’s going to be a motivational classic, and you’ll be in on the first wave of inspired readers.” - Pat Williams, Senior Vice President, Orlando Magic; and Author, The Warrior Within

post Rules For A Happy Life - Start with Gratitude, The Key to Contentment and A Happy Life and Career

January 16th, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Bob Haddad @ 3:22 am

In the movie “What About Bob”, Bill Murray plays a silly, loveable, but dependent and highly manipulative obsessive-compulsive psychiatric patient named Bob. Bob is being treated by Leo Marvin, played by Richard Dreyfuss. Dr. Marvin treats Bob using a program based on “Baby Steps”, his new book in which he details his philosophy of treating patients and their phobias by helping them make progress one small step at a time.

The moving, of course, is a comedy, but I think we can take the simple theory of reaching a goal by first getting started, then making steady progress…one step at a time…Baby Steps.

Applying this to how we can live a happy life, I believe much of our unhappiness is due to our lack of gratitude. We pout and have a pity party about everything in our life and at work. We in essence talk ourselves into a false reality that we are unhappy. If we will stop pouting and focus on the many blessings in our lives, we will literally be transformed by the renewing of our minds and attitude.

I have a very good friend, who when he was spending everyday complaining about every little detail of his life and career, had a wise mentor in his life look him straight in the eye and tell him “you know what’s wrong with you…you need a check up from the neck up!”

Do you need a check up from the neck up? I know I did and still do from time to time. One of the best tools and resources I and many of my friends and business associates have used to change their worldview is a Gratitude Journal. It is very simple, but it works! You will stop pouting and complaining, start realizing that you have much to be thankful for, and begin to be much more content…happier in life and at work! You have to try it! Melodie Beattie - best selling author and journalist

The Daily Gratitude Journal software is a step-by-step software that easily guides you through a series of questions helping you recognize and highlight the 5 most important people, events, and things that happened during your day.

post If You Want To Be Happy For The Rest Of Your Life - Welcome To Happy Life And Work…

a blog dedicated to folks like me and like you, who after a long and often hard stretch in our lives, desire happiness, peace, joy, and contentment in our lives and careers. Our hearts tell us it is possible to experience true happiness in life and in our work. And, something is beckoning us to search for the answer, to find the way, and to discover the truth about living a meaningful, happy life.

My name is Bob, and I can’t resist the call anymore…

I know how challenging life and work can be. Working 40, 50, 60, maybe 70 hours per week and adding to that the responsibilities of being a good spouse, father, mother, brother, sister, friend, employee, volunteer, coach, supervisor, owner, president, CEO, Executive Director, etc. It can be overwhelming! I know because I have been there. So have you, haven’t you?

So, how does someone experience happiness in life, at home, in marriage, with family, and at work in the midst of today’s faced paced society and culture? Is it even possible to lead or create a happy life? Is it possible to live both a happy and a successful life? What are the keys to happiness and success in this life? How are we supposed to measure happiness and success? Are happiness and success even related to one another? Is there a recipe, secrete, blueprint, or a set of rules for living a happy life? Does God promise us a happy life?

Questions Not Answered These are some big, profound, and important questions. Questions that I want to come along side you and wrestle with. Questions that I do not have all the answers to, but that I know are worth the journey. And so, I invite you on the journey. A journey that will cause us to laugh and perhaps cry; A journey that will be the catalyst for us to grow personally, professionally, and spiritually, as along the way I introduce you to some great resources, tools, and tips that have proven helpful as I and others have twisted and turned along our route to a better life.

I am glad to have you as a travel partner. Let’s get started. I know we all want to be happier!
